* Irigaray, Luce. “This Sex Which Is Not One,” New York: Cornell University Press, 1985.

** The C.F. Hathaway Shirt Company, “America’s oldest shirt factory,” produced men’s shirts, primarily by women. Hathaway shirts were made for Union soldiers during the Civil War, Christian Dior, and the U.S. Defense Department. After several mergers, in 2001 the company Windsong, Inc. of Connecticut bought the Hathaway Company. Windsong then closed the mill in Waterville, Maine, in October 2002 and over 500 people lost their jobs. Contracts not fulfilled by Wal-Mart and the U.S. Air Force contributed to Hathaway’s closure in Maine. Windsong attributed Hathaway’s demise to “foreign competition.”
