John Coffer Tintype Silent Auction at VCP!
The VT Center for Photography proudly announces its’ silent auction of an original John Coffer tintype donated by Coffer himself. The piece will be up for silent auction for the month of December during our annual Members Holiday Exhibit & Sale.
To be auctioned off as a fundraiser, titled: “The Last Day”, one of only two self portraits from “The Daily Tintype” series. This series documents John’s daily activities. The images include running cattle, utilizing draft horses, or oxen to his Soghrum mill, splitting wood for heat, and/or making daily tintypes. For 28 years, he has used the age old wet-plate collodian method on Black-Japanned tin, making a “tin-type” or “ferrotype.” Only on the first and last days out of 365 shots did John make a second tintype. Otherwise, it was one-per-day in 2007.
On the first day, John faced his camera, standing on the porch - and away from the lens for the final day. This “Daily Tintype”, inscribed on the back with his signature, is from the last day, and is dated December 31, 2007. On the verso, it is usually “japanned”, but this piece is even more special. John used “Hobo Tin”, a name he created to describe recycled metal from ordinary tin cans. This one is reused from a Christmas cookietin, depicting a color profile of Santa Claus. It measures 3 1/8 by 4 1/2 inches, with Sandarac varnish over the image.
Bidding will begin in the gallery at the Members’ Exhibit opening on December 2nd at 5:30p.m. (EST) and will officially close December 31st at 6p.m. (EST). The minimum bid will start at $400 and we ask that bidders place their bids in minimum increments of $25. There will be information provided as well for online bidding so stay in touch!
Now’s your chance to own a piece of photographic history - Don’t miss out on this great opportunity!
The piece will be professionally mounted and framed specially allowing both sides of the piece to be viewed by Zephyr Designs located on Main St, Brattleboro, VT.

VCP Welcomes a New Gallery Manager!
VCP Members & Friends,
I hope you’ll take a moment to give a warm welcome to VCP’s newest Gallery Manager, Joshua Farr! After some consideration, I have decided to step down from my position with the Gallery due to some difficulty commuting between the gallery and my home in Marlboro; however, it is with the warmest feelings that I say goodbye, and I very much look forward to staying involved and in touch with the friends I’ve made here with VCP.
Thanks again for your support of the Center, and welcome Josh!
Take care,
Kirsten Wiking

From InSight Photography:
Hello Fellow Photographers,
The In-Sight Photography Project is gearing up for our 13th Annual Silent Auction and we could use your help! We are asking photographers and collectors to donate a print to this fundraiser in order to allow us to continue to offer scholarships to students who are unable to pay the class fees. This is our largest fundraiser and a significant way in which we are able to offer scholarships to our students. Last year, 20% of our budget went to this cause and we expect that number to increase considerably this year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at stephen@insight-photography.org or 802-251-9960.
Thank you for considering donating to our auction and we are excited to continue our relationship with VCP!

VCP Survives the Flat Street flood
Aftermath of Hurricane Irene at VCP:
Hello Members & Friends of VCP,
Despite intense flooding along Flat Street,VCP was able to escape much of the damage caused by the storm. While there was some flooding in the basement, the water never reached above the decking, so there was no flooding in the main room of the gallery.
We are so lucky and grateful to have dodged the bullet on this one, and thank you all for your concern and support throughout this difficult time.
We look forward to seeing you around the Gallery this month for our September show,
Life and Traditions in Caucasus Georgia, photographs by Gia Chkhatarashvili.
With thanks and gratitude,
Kirsten Wiking
