Studio Lighting: Exploring the use of Artificial Light
Instructor(s):

David Ryan

Dates and Times:

Saturday, February 27th and Saturday March 6th.  1:00 – 4:00 PM

Description:

The ability to “see light” is critical to any serious photographer.  Knowing when the light is right or better yet, being able to “make” it
right, can make the difference between an average and an exceptional photograph.  Many fine art photographers can “see the light”, but lack
the ability to control and manipulate light.  This workshop is designed to introduce beginner and intermediate photographers, to the basics of
studio lighting.

Section 1.  Participants will learn to recognize what light works best in a given situation. The discussion will begin with basic tungsten lighting, with flood lights and fresnel spots, along with many shortcuts and tips.  Then in small groups, students will utilize those techniques on small still life sets.  Images will be captured onto a computer for group discussion.

Section 2.  For the 2nd session, studio strobes and soft boxes will be demonstrated, then students will practice their use on the set.
Participants are encouraged to bring small items to photograph for this session, and are welcome to bring their own camera and tripod.
David will also discuss the most basic, simple, and most affordable way to do studio lighting at home, without spending thousands of dollars.

Instructor Bio(s):

For over 35 years David Ryan has worked as a commercial photographer in Western Massachusetts.  Graduating from Franklin Institute of
Technology, in Boston, with a major in Commercial and Industrial Photography, he began his career as a custom color printer.  After working as an in-house product photographer at Stanhome Corporation in Easthampton and head photographer at Kollmorgen Corporation in Northampton, he launched his own studio business, which he has run for over 27 years. Today, David continues to create the right light in the studio and on location, for a broad array of clients ranging from Steinway Piano to Lego Toys.  In paper mills, hotels and corporate offices, he utilizes his lighting skills to create images for advertising.

What you need to bring:

Note:  For section 1, participant will only need a notebook and pen.
